  • Luke Skywalker

Alright, another assignment to either bash or praise a person from the history. I’m honest, I don’t like doing this, because a lot of our ancestors were facing choices we hopefully won’t be facing. Don’t take it as act of cowardice, but compared to what events there were during Luke Skywalker’s Era, we have rather peaceful days nowadays. All what matters recently, according to HoloNet is weheter to make podracing legal or not. Other than that - rebuilding of Cloud City. Anyways, initial rambling off.

I hope Master Alkorda will not be disappointed, if I say, that Luke Skywalker was neither. Of course, I will go on why is that. Lives were lost, war never brings joy to anyone. War means the lives will be lost. Not the other way around.

Luke Skywalker - a hero? He is seen as such by people, yes. And, if we look at it by those opressed by the Empire, he indeed was a hero for them. He managed to stop the Empire, destroy one of the most horrible weapons made in the history. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it could easily be considered as the most dangerous weapon made so far. None the less, this weapon, after doing a research was made for sole purpose. To tighten the grip on the people. To rule them with fear. And, why would they invest credits and manpower for weapon which would not be used? So by those who felt the grip of the empire, he was indeed a hero. A lot of these people were careless as to how many lives were wasted on both sides. i’m sure all what mattered for them was that the Empire was gone.

Luke Skywalker joined the cause of Rebel Alliance, because he believed that this war, this opression needed to end. Just look and calculate how many lives faded on Aldaraan. It was entire planet destroyed in matter of seconds? Minutes? Honestly, who can tell me how many lives were there, fading away? This is what Luke Skywalker stopped from happening further, by his actions and by destroying the Second Death Star.

Other than that, Luky Skywalker rebuilt the Jedi Order basicaly from nothing. I personally believe he did what he believed was good, to save more lives and also to continue the legacy of Jedi post-war.

Luke Skywalker - A villain? He can be easily seen as one. From what I studied in the Archives, there were many people serving aboard the Death Star. It was size of moon. Hard for me to imagine, yes. How many lives were there, when Luke Skywalker shot his blow? These people serving there could be easily here just to feed their families. Some of them could be corrupted to core, to serve the Empire because they were brainwashed, but few rotten Banthas should not mean that the good ones needed to be killed as well. Other than that, the military personnel was just following orders of their superiors. I don’t need to say that the consequences of disobeying could be - and as I saw, even were sometimes fatal. Yes, playing on the knowledge that Darth Vader choked few of his officers to death after they ‘failed’ him.

Anyways, these lives were lost. I cannot imagine the grief their families went through. Not everyone in the Empire was directly supporting it’s cause. But not everyone is born to be able to change things. Most people just have to cope with circumstances with their best abilities. Some of these people simply didn’t have the choice. Besides, as i said - war never brings anything good. War is the last resort, killing even more. Luke Skywalker probably didn’t even realize how many lives he wasted. Of course, that is not an excuse. Especially for a Jedi, life has value beyond anything. Was Luke Skywalker that naive or ignorant?

He’s not a hero. He’s not a villain. To me, Luke Skywalker is someone I’d describe as controversy person. At one side he managed to rebuild the Jedi Order and at the other side he didn’t even realize the consequences for both sides, with all lives lost. And that is why Luke Skywalker leaves me with mixtured feelings and I’m unable to call him either a hero or villain.
