  • Hoggon

Another history class of Master Alkorda brought another person to be discussed. The surprising fact was that the whole class agreed that Hoggon was a villain, despite the differences in reasoning as to why he was a villain. Well, still - haven’t seen everyone agreeing so far in this class. Master Alkorda took dibs on me, when he said that I surely think he was a hero, because I labelled everyone as a hero so far. Funny (not really).

Hoggon was hardly a hero. While he thought he punished a former Sith, nobody has the right to take justice to their own hands. By murdering him, he was no better than the Sith. And as much as I believed at first that this Ulic Qel Dorma wasn’t punished in the first place, my opinion changed after the discussion going on in the class. I am inclined to believe that losing connection to the Force was enough to him. I’m supposed to write a defending two paragraphs about how Hoggon could be considered a hero, which is indeed challenging, considering that he acted out of pure ignorance and for pure self-gain in glory. Hard to defend self-absorbed, selfish person. Well, enough of random talk.

The Archives mention that Ulic was stripped from his connection to the Force, after which he left and imposed exile on himself to atone for his crimes. A lot of people never heard about that part. People could see him as getting away unpunished. Those not trained in the Force usage or being unable to feel the Force would never understand the kind of punishment Ulic got. Some would think that he should pay far higher price. These people would indeed see Hoggon as hero, because he took justice into his hands, doing what the Jedi couldn’t do and punish former Sith lord who massacred many.

Hoggon himself had no idea what happened to the Sith lord. As someone who was not Force sensitive, he wouldn’t even understand the punishment he got. After finding Ulic unpunished, at least in his eyes, he thought that the former Sith lord would be able to kill more people. Hoggon thought that if he killed him, he would save others from certain death at hands of the Sith Lord. His intention was good, he believed he was doing the right thing. He was unaware of the fact that Ulic was no longer his ‘old’ self.

Bottom line of the assignment, as my side note - Is ignorance really excuse?
