  • Jedi Legacy

    (written by Johauna Darkrider)

Last class, Master Feraan gave us an assignment - to research and write about Ancient Jedi Knight or Jedi Master, who has to be Pre-clone Wars Era. Me, being rather new around, studying in the Archives quite often, decided to do a research on that subject, and spent quite some time on this, reading about various Jedi Knights and Masters. After three days, i finally found a Jedi, which may not be as famous as some I ran into in the Archives, yet, i believe she left the legacy for everyone aspiring to becoming a perfect Jedi.

I decided to take on and write an assignment about Jedi Knight Juhani.

    Jedi Knight Juhani

    Jedi Knight Juhani

Juhani lived in the Era of the Old Republic, being a Cathar, race known for it’s strong temper. Cathars are natural warriors, and Juhani was no exception from that. She had very hard childhood, witnessing her people to be slaughtered during Mandalorian Wars. She and her family escaped to Taris, hoping for better future. However, her life apparently didn’t become any easier. Native residents discriminated non-humans and threated them poorly, forcing them to live in slums. Juhani developped some sort of dislike for Taris during that period of her life.

In 3963 BBY, the Mandalorians enter the Republic space and Taris fell under siege. Juhani’s father was killed during that, leaving Juhani in care of her mother. Juhani’s mother tried as much as she could to sustain them both, however, it was not enough. this is where Juhani’s mother did a mistake and started to borrow money from the Exchange, a criminal organization of immense power, way back then. No matter how much Juhani’s mother tried, it was still not enough, giving most of their food to her daughter. That led to inevitable - Juhani’s mother dies and the Exchange enslaves Juhani because of debts her mother made.

The life of slave was one of the most nasty memories Juhani gathered. However, things began to change, after the Jedi led by Revan freed her, when they came to fight the Mandalorians.

After that, Juhani’s determination of having a better life grew stronger. She was inspired by the deeds of the Jedi, having a children idealization of them, seeing them as invincible Champions of light. Revan himself encouraged Juhani to join the Jedi, with Juhani pleading a vow she would do so.

Juhani worked hard to get enough money, and when she had credits sufficient, she boarded a ship travelling to Dantooine. As we all know, there was an Jedi Enclave during that era - and life begun to be a bit more brighter for Juhani, as she was accepted into the Jedi Order and taken as a Padawan by Jedi Master Quatra.

Years passing by, Juhani progressed with her training, however, she struggled with mastering her emotions a lot. This is where her Master set up a test of sorts for her. Juhani soughed to become a perfect Jedi, willing to learn everything she could to do so. She didn’t want to fail in any case, always strived towards the best.

As mentioned above, I’ve read that Master Quatra have her padawan to face a test, where she and her had a training spar, in which Master Quatra was struck down by Juhani, after she failed on controlling her emotions. Master Quatra chose to play as she was dead, leaving Juhani in belief of turning to the Dark Side. Juhani escaped the Jedi Enclave, holding the belief of her own turning to the Dark Side as true, finding her hideout in nearby ancient groove, where the Jedi ocasionally came and meditated. That affected the kath hounds which were living there in a way they became more agressive towards anyone.

Jedi Revan comes back on the scene, when he’s sent to clean the groove. Juhani, still in belief that she embraced the Dark side with strucking down her Master, unaware it was Jedi Revan, confronts him and despite her belief, he defeats her. She realized that the Dark side is not a way, Revan told her to ask for mercy the Jedi council. She had doubts at first, but the charisma of the Jedi convinced her.

Her story moves on, she’s granted a mercy by the Jedi council, being informed that Master Quatra wasn’t dead, that it was just a mere test for her. With that, she passed the test given to her by her mentor, however, she did feel foolish, when she thought that she’d be  match for her former Master. She finally came to a point as to what her Master tried to teach her. A humility and knowledge of her own limits. Master Quatra’s test forced Juhani to rethink of herself, to show her how even a devoted, fierced student, willing to become a perfect, strong Jedi can easily turn things around, how easy is to slip to the Dark Side even with the best of intentions.

I could go on with Juhani’s story, but i believe this is where her legacy lies, to every Jedi. While the Jedi should pursue learning and knowledge, they should be aware of themselves. Of their own traits, seeing both good and bad ones. Learning about themselves. Striving to be perfect, but with reason. A Jedi should be aware of their limitations. Perfectionism will lead only to frustration, which is a road towards the Dark Side.

Juhani’s legacy has a personal reflection in me, I see myself as being hard on myself, striving towards perfectionism as well. Learning and training no matter how much the cost is for me. And ending up frustrated, if I don’t do as I expect myself to do. It’s yet a lesson for me to be learnt - and I’ll make sure this lesson will be learnt, in due time.

Juhani is a prime example of being the Legacy for us without even trying to be one. She has my utmost respect for conquering her own ’shadows’, and I’m really grateful she left me and all of the Jedi this legacy, for the generations coming as well.

      Assignment summary:

A well-researched history of Juhani. Contains several noticable errors, otherwise solid writing. Solidly developed paragraphs with decent reflection on Juhani’s legacy, especially in relation to the author. Could use minor revisions, but quality work overall. A strong effort, certainly qualified as “passing”.

      95 percent.

      Johauna,

Overall, excellent job with the assignment. Your scholarship is thorough and your facts are quite accurate. Some of your writing is still somewhat awkward, but this is to be expected at this point in your training; you still wrote as well as most pupils that I have taught.

I have identified some of the most striking phrases that could have used improvement. Take note and study the relative problems between each sentence.

“The life of slave was one of the most nasty memories Juhani gathered.”

“After that, Juhani’s determination of having a better life grew stronger.”

“As mentioned above, I’ve read that Master Quatra have her padawan to face a test, where she and her had a training spar, in which Master Quatra was struck down by Juhani, after she failed on controlling her emotions.”

“Juhani escaped the Jedi Enclave, holding the belief of her own turning to the Dark Side as true, finding her hideout in nearby ancient groove, where the Jedi ocasionally came and meditated.”

“That affected the kath hounds which were living there in a way they became more agressive towards anyone.”

“Her story moves on, she’s granted a mercy by the Jedi council…”

“Juhani, still in belief that she embraced the Dark side with strucking down her Master, unaware it was Jedi Revan, confronts him and despite her belief, he defeats her.”

I enjoyed your thoughts on similarities between Juhani and yourself, though I should have liked to see a bit more on her “overall legacy” and less of a biographical entry. However, given that you provided a strong history of a somewhat important Jedi of the Old Republic era, I consider your assignment completely sufficient, even with the small, varied problems that I have identified.

      Signed,

      Cyril Feraan, Jedi Knight
