  • Ganner Rhysode
    (Hero or Villain?)

Master Alkorda asked us to write an essay about what we think about Ganner Rhysode, who was a Jedi Knight during Yuuzhan Vong War. There was quite a discussion going on the class, regarding that subject, and I disagreed with few points. After doing some research on Ganner Rhysode, I summed out my thoughts.

Ganner Rhysode can be seen as both. He was conflicting person. However - I do see him as a hero. Yuuzhan Vong were intruders. Slaughtered many and many, before the New Republic even sent any offense against them. Yuuzhan Vong started this conflict, not the New Republic. Not the Jedi. Yuuzhan Vong had to be stopped, otherwise the war would go on, the slaughtering would continue, with lives fading on both sides. Yes, both sides were suffering, sentinent beings were dying on both sides. It could hardly be resolved by other means. The conflict was already raging for a very long time. Ganner didn’t care about himself at that point. He was willing to sacrifice himself, so Jacen Solo would have enough time to kill the World Brain and stop the inevitable. He knew he was going to die there, but he held himself with a dignity and faced the enemy, despite the odds being against him. He fought valiantly. Not for the glory. But to stop more massacre happening. To protect further lives. There’s no use to mourn for what was lost, he was thinking out for the future, for others to live. He ended his life in the most noble way a Jedi could do - stopping the conflict and prevent many more from dying, protecting the life, fulfilling what the Force wills - the life.

Some may argue my points, that Ganner was a villain. Some people do not believe that a Jedi should take a life, by all means. I would ask these people, what they would do? Would they die, allowing more and more people to be slaughtered? I do not condone killing. However, there are situations, when straight approach is necessary. Jedi are protectors of Peace, protectors of life in general, serving the Will of the Force. Some people deny it, but the Jedi *are* also warriors. Not from lust to fight, but out of necessary. That would be naive to think that everything can be solved without a single fight. Lives were already lost on both sides. What Ganner did was, that he stopped the conflicts by his actions. If he didn’t face these Yuuzhan Vong warriors, I’m certain more sentinent beings would die. Again, on both sides, and I stress that. He did his duty. The Force wills life, and by his actions, he saved life of others. He acted out of necessary and fulfilled the role of Jedi Guardian, at least the way I see it.

His actions in the end did save many lives, including the life of Jacen Solo. His actions led to end of the conflict with Yuuzhan Vong. By killing hundreds of them, he protected those who would be slaughtered if he didn’t do it. It was act of necessary, that’s for sure. He sought to fulfill his duty as a Jedi and this was the only possible way to do it, to stop the slaughtering on both sides.
